Several days ago I put the ends of two celery bunches in small bowls.  I soaked a paper towel with water, so that the celery wasn't sitting in it , which I assumed would make the celery ends rot before they grew anything useful.  Ideally I would have preferred to set them in wet sand, but don't have any sand at the moment.  Thought I would give this experiment a try, and so far, so good!

Celery is so good for you, and I love to use it in broths, soups and stews.  It is high in vitamin K ( I have a bleeding disorder so this one is important to me), is an anti-inflammatory and a good antioxidant.  If I have found a way to keep it growing continuously, I would be very, very pleased.  I'll keep you posted!

New follower here sent from Rural Revolution! I too am attempting to grow celery from just the bottom of the plant. I placed mine in soil and water. It's only been a day so I have no results as of yet. Is yours just in paper towel with a small amount of water or do you have soil in it as well?

Lacy, good to have you with us! I don't have any dirt in the bowl, just a soaking wet paper towel. In the back of my mind I have bits and pieces of information for future projects, one of which is growing celery in raised beds. I seem to remember that it is easiest to grow them in mostly wet sand, and very little, if any, dirt. I could certainly be wrong about that, but as of now I am trying this without dirt.

Keep me posted on yours! It will be interesting to see which method works best.

p.s. Rural Revolution has been so great; again, thanks to them for the mention!

I hope you don't mind if I share my experience with you. :) I started my celery end in water, when it started to sprout and leaf I moved it into the dirt. I actually tried several methods at the same time- some straight into dirt, some with water first. I found you had to watch the water method since it would get mushy but it led to new growth faster. :) They transplanted really well and kept growing until I had to pull them to make room for something else. :)

Chara, thanks so much for your story, and your link to your experience. I potted both of mine last night and will be doing a new update tomorrow. So far, they are still growing really well.
