It may be cold outside right now, but in no time spring will be upon us, and plants will start producing their bounty once again. Mulberry trees are often overlooked as having a valuable fruit, but that couldn't be further from the truth for my family.
Mulberries have always held a special place in my heart, harkening back to my childhood, when my sister and I would wander around the neighborhood with no shoes on, eating as many berries as we could, and coming home with stained hands, faces, and feet. I have always encouraged my children to do the same. I am of the opinion that if kids go outside in the spring and summer and come back in clean, they aren't being proper children.
In that spirit, last year I took my kids to a friend's place for Mulberry Day. We used old sheets to gather as many as we could catch, which is an activity that all by itself is worth doing even if you don't get enough to cook. The ones that didn't end up in our mouths ended up in the kitchen, and the kids learned to make mulberry pie.
This year, don't leave 'em for the birds! Go pick some mulberries. And get dirty, for goodness sake.
