Shows a simple solar system, great to watch if you have never used solar. This is the system we used for our chicken coop, runs the light and the outlet. It is relatively inexpensive, and ours is still going strong over a year later.

Have you tried running an electric heater for the chicken waterer on your solar / battery setup? We are currently using a bit of "redneck wiring" to power our hen house, although the only thing we routinely use is the heater for a few weeks out of the year, which draws 125 watts.

Kate, we haven't tried to use it for any kind of heat source. We have ducks too, so we don't keep any water in the coop; they are way too messy! The chickens have a heated water bowl outside, and there is a heated pool for the ducks, but both are run with extension cords from the barn. I'm not sure if this solar setup would have enough juice to run any kind of heating element. We really just wanted it for the light, so we could manipulate the winter egg laying of the birds. 10/25/2013 05:37:12 pm
